What’s the Value in a Public Blockchain?

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:49:18+00:00March 18th, 2019|New Trust Economy|

What’s the Value in a Public Blockchain? Blockchains were originally conceived for the purpose of circumventing centralization. The inventor, Satoshi Nakamoto, wanted to cut intermediaries out of payment systems and make a pure peer-to-peer system that would be validated by participants across the world. Here are some key points to understand the pros and cons of a public blockchain. What is a public blockchain? A public or “open” blockchain is a transparent record of transactions that can be confirmed by anyone who cares to participate in the network. There is no requirement to meet conditions for admission into the network. Anyone with a computer and Internet access is able to participate in all functions of the system. The classic example of a public blockchain is the Bitcoin network. Anyone who wants to participate can create a Bitcoin wallet, purchase Bitcoin and begin transacting on the network. Anyone can become a [...]

Bitcoin Explained for your Grandma

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:49:18+00:00March 11th, 2019|New Trust Economy|

Often times, working in the blockchain industry, I am asked to explain what Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies actually are. What is their value? How are they created? What is the point of it all? To help clarify things, I’ve defined these terms and simplified them with analogies and metaphors that even your grandmother could understand. What is a cryptocurrency? A cryptocurrency is a digital currency in which cryptographic techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, often operating independently of a central bank or authority. Imagine trying to throw a dollar bill from Texas to Singapore. It’s a tall task, and even if it were possible, it would take a quite a long time to get there. What if that dollar bill were digital, not physical, and could be sent as easily and quickly as an e-mail? This is [...]

Why Real Estate Needs Blockchain

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:49:19+00:00March 4th, 2019|New Trust Economy|

In 2016, the real estate transaction volumes in the U.S. totaled $491 billion. While the sales of U.S. homes decreased dramatically in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, they’ve been on the rise since 2011. In 2016 alone, 560,000 houses sold throughout the country. As the real estate industry begins to grow once more, lots of financial specialists are indicating that it should start looking toward blockchain. And for good reason: The Bitcoin network is more powerful than 500 supercomputers working together, and alternative currency Ethereum now has a global market cap of more than $27.2 billion. The industry is growing, and it’s reshaping the way private consumers and companies alike regard currency. One place where crypto has been relatively slow to take on, though, is the real estate industry. As TechCrunch has previously reported, the real estate industry has mostly overlooked the benefits of blockchain technology, even though using the technology could increase [...]

In Mark Twain’s 1892 novel, “The American Claimant,” the enigmatic Mulberry Sellers utters the famous phrase, “there’s gold in them thar hills.” That oft-repeated cry sent many a 19th-century prospector off in pursuit of the precious metal. Today, evolving artist enclaves point developers and investors to modern-day “real estate gold.” Typically, artists attract other artists, and restaurants, galleries and other small businesses quickly follow. In short, growing cultural capital begets rising real estate values. In turn, new real estate projects typically follow. Economic Impact This is no isolated phenomenon. The overall impact of artists and this nation’s creative industries is substantial. For example, the Miami Herald cited a study by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis that quantified the productivity of creative industries. The bureau calculated the contribution at 4.2 percent of GDP — more than $700 billion. Another study found that Miami’s relatively new arts scene helped support nonprofit arts and cultural organizations [...]

Insights into the Mysteries of Mortgages

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:49:20+00:00February 18th, 2019|New Trust Economy|

List a godmother’s rather diverse duties, and helping her godchild shop for a mortgage is likely not mentioned. In my case, I had an overachiever for a godmother. So, many years ago, when housing suddenly became my personal Priority Number One, my godmother showed up to help, as they say, “with bells on.” My budget persuaded me to focus on a little town in the Southwest, where the cost of living was low. But no matter where I landed, I knew what I had to do - save up three months rent, use one month’s worth as a security deposit, another month’s worth for the first rent payment and the final third as a rainy day fund. Done. From Renting to Buying To this day, I am grateful that my godmother had a better idea than just helping me get into another apartment. When she suggested it [...]

If Blockchains Are So Secure, Why Is Everyone Getting Hacked?

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:49:20+00:00February 6th, 2019|New Trust Economy|

If you keep up with cryptocurrency news, you have certainly heard about the cyber theft running rampant in the industry. According to CNBC, the total amount of stolen cryptocurrencies in just the first half of 2018 was $1.1 billion. With blockchains being touted as these amazing, impenetrable networks, you may be wondering how it is possible for so much crypto to get swiped. The simple answer is that the majority of thefts have nothing to do with vulnerabilities in the blockchains themselves, but can instead be attributed to human error. With the traditional banking system, we rely heavily on the tools employed by our banks and governments to keep our money secure and often times, we can’t even see that these security systems are there. With cryptocurrencies, you act as your own bank. You are solely responsible for the safety and security of your funds and without proper education on the [...]

All Tokens Are Not Created Equal

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:49:21+00:00February 6th, 2019|New Trust Economy|

Cryptocurrencies are not all the same. There are several different types of coin and tokens, and by that I mean there is a variety of different behaviors that different cryptocurrencies resemble. This is because the people making these currencies are literally writing the rules for how they work. Sound confusing? It is, and for this reason, I am going to drill into the main types of currencies that are currently on the market. Security (Equity) Tokens Security tokens are tokens that act as stocks or shares in a company. Often these coins employ Proof-of- Stake systems (PoS), in which token holders are rewarded periodically for “staking” (holding) their tokens — similar to dividends paid by public corporations to shareholders. These tokens are recognized by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as securities, and so these tokens are subject to the same taxes and regulations as typical corporate shares — making them the least [...]

This is complicated. It's complicated and it sounds so boring. It's like let's sit down and talk about white papers. That's the blockchain specific equivalent. They'll say, "I read your white paper." I'm like, "Did your eyes bleed? Because my eyes bled trying to write it." I'd feel the same way about business plans. It's the same thing. It's [...]

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:50:08+00:00January 29th, 2019|New Trust Economy|

Getting Out Of The Garage with Steve Wozniak

Tracy Hazzard2023-11-22T08:50:12+00:00December 26th, 2018|New Trust Economy|

The blockchain is all about establishing value and checks and balances. Unfortunately, inventors who invest their brain and create things don't wind up getting as much value as people who put money in. Engineers, school teachers, and a lot of other sectors aren't respected well in terms of money and value. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, doesn’t think in terms of value or money. Steve says if you have no money, no bank accounts, you can start doing things at home and create stuff out of the garage. Work on your models until you know you have a not just a good product but a great one. --- Getting Out Of The Garage with Steve Wozniak I am here at ChainXChange with Steve Wozniak. Blockchain and the Uses of Democracy on Steroids

Yes, the original blockchain concept was only created to solve the accounting issue of “the double- spend conundrum” of digital currencies, which, along with sounding boring, also comes across as very, let’s say, niche. How is such a specific “conundrum” supposed to apply to anyone without an accounting degree? Excellent question. But if you look closer, the ingenious structure of a blockchain can be applied virtually anywhere, and offers to upgrade the existing, antiquated system of centralization and authority of one governing body, to a system wherein the authority is inherent in the consensus of the participating crowd. Think of it like democracy on steroids. Blockchain technology offers the advantages of accountability, efficiency and transparency in places desperately in need of a new solution. Although there are many areas of industry and society that can benefit from blockchain, the ones that come to mind the soonest (read, the lowest hanging [...]

Though the original blockchain was only created to solve the double-spend conundrum of digital currencies, the ingenious structure of a blockchain can be applied anywhere, offering advantages of accountability, efficiency and transparency. Let’s take a look at some industries that could benefit from the new technology. Identity Management Governments can issue blockchain-based ID systems, allowing them to easily identify and track citizens without the possibility of identity fraud. This system can be used to manage citizens, grant permissions to certain citizens, and build reliable, transparent voting systems. In simple terms, voter registration no longer needs to be a problem. With blockchain, the solution exists. Human Resources In a business context, identity management has a lot of on site and process-related benefits. An employer could replace traditional ID cards with a blockchain-based identification system, and eradicate the opportunity for fraud. This would enhance the security of office buildings with restricted access, [...]

When creating the technology behind Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto envisioned an efficient, peer-to-peer payment system that required no institutional involvement. Ten years later, beyond changing payment systems or inciting wild investor frenzies, the technology at the heart of Bitcoin holds the potential to have a profound impact on the world’s social sector in the 21st century. Though the word ‘blockchain’ is currently most associated with various forms of digital currencies, the technology can be used to record virtually any form of data exchange in a secure and trustless manner. Anything from property sales to supply chain management can benefit from the simplicity of an open cryptographic ledger. By using a distributed validation process for these types of exchanges, the need for third-party verification (auditors) is completely negated, saving individuals and businesses valuable time and money. Similarly, blockchains used by governments would enable automated compliance systems and remove the need for many [...]

Top three social use cases getting real with the blockchain, and how you can do some social good too. There are places around the world in severe crisis, a sad truth which has caused citizens to flee in search of a fair chance at life, or life in general. When we think about immigrants, we often discuss their plight, dangerous journeys, separation from comfort and loved ones... but we often don't discuss food, a basic human need. Regardless of your stance on immigration, we can all agree that, in order for a human life to be sustained, they must have food. And the innovators at the United Nation's World Food Programme are meeting this need with blockchain technology. A Goal to End Hunger with Technology At the Zaatari Jordanian camp for Syrian Refugees, the people often don't have identification, resources, access to banking, or assets to utilize. They've fled their home country, and many [...]

Rapper/actor Common points out why the tech revolution needs to be more cultural and gender inclusive. You know that feeling when you go to see an amazing speaker, and the energy just stays with you for days? That's me, multiplied. I cannot get over the energy and thought inspired by the blockchain event I attended in early August. There's a pivot happening, in industries where men reign supreme... women are taking the stage more than I've ever seen before. This CXC event was a surprisingly female packed conference - full of powerhouse speakers. And these women are breaking the "story" about a lack of women in tech and lack of women seeking funding. They have found a place where the value of your innovation is rewarded and who you are can be race and gender blind, which is downright amazing. Female Consumers Need Their Voices Heard The female half of the population must participate [...]
