When we first covered Modsy, they were knee-deep in solving the antiquated, but still very common, problems plaguing the furniture manufacturing models we rely upon today. Of course, in furniture, keeping a low to zero inventory plus local manufacturing model is the most cost effective, but what if manufacturing could be shifted to later in the process? What if we could rely on new technology to design, meet needs and wants, and reduce costs by meeting the demand right where it is? Now, they are selling furniture, and focusing heavily on the user experience with an ever-growing AI. Add to that the fact that every design generated is automatically shoppable, which, I believe is the future of furniture buying and even room design. Sourcing products that are difficult to find, especially from companies that don’t sell direct to consumer is reaching an underserved stream of customers, and boosting Modsy’s already impressive track record. We want consumers to come in and find unique pieces that fit the vision they have for their room.
Integration: Design Meets Technology (over and over again)
Modsy identifies their space as being at the “intersection of design, art, and technology” which is exactly the type of integration our modern business ecosystem needs. Style and design is not too subjective to be fueled by data. This realization has allowed Modsy to quantify and measure every step of the way, data I only dreamed of having when I first began in furniture design and sales so many years ago. Shanna Tellerman and Alessandra Wood talked with me about what they’ve learned from their AI, and how they continue to apply that technology. Their attention to their AI has helped them add creative elements, develop their own furniture line, and stay ahead of quick-changing trends in the furniture market, some that might not be noticed without the data.

I consider myself color-forecasting royalty at this point, and I know personally that it’s a huge undertaking to stay ahead of color trends. Especially when a lot of this forecasting is on the “right now”, not on future demand. These kind of in-the-moment forecasting needs are really where AI data comes in handy. This AI is driven by the customer, learning as it goes, matching supply with demand. Modsy is also relying on their AI to help them leverage human capacity to do the high value work, and leverage the computer to do the important, but much more routine work.
